Rounding applies once to daily totals by default, or once to the overall total when selected. Both overtime mode uses the higher estimate; it does not add the two. This is arithmetic, not state-law compliance, taxes or payroll advice. Method & limitations.

Decimal hours are the column to use in your payroll sheet.

This punch clock calculator helps convert a punched, printed or transcribed record into weekly working hours. Enter the paired times manually and check unclear punches before using the result.

Read a physical card one pair at a time

Find the arrival and departure marks that form one continuous working period. On a physical card, columns may represent an earlier and later period rather than one uninterrupted day. Keep those pairs separate when transcribing them into the calculator. Confirm the date, any printed AM/PM indicator and whether a mark was corrected by hand. The page does not scan card images or identify a person from a clock number. Its purpose is to make the arithmetic of a legible record easier to check without buying or configuring a clock terminal.

Resolve duplicate or overlapping marks before totaling

A second punch close to an earlier mark may be a correction, a duplicate or a genuine short period. Do not add both automatically. The calculator sums entered periods independently and does not decide which punch is authoritative. It also does not automatically remove overlapping working periods. If 09:00–12:00 and 11:30–15:00 represent the same continuous work, entering both would count their overlap twice. Verify the source and correct the transcription before relying on the sum. An unexplained large total can be a reason to inspect this sequence.

Translate machine notation into ordinary clock times

Use 24-hour entries such as 0903 or 17:07, or write the time with an explicit AM/PM suffix. Bare hours use 24-hour interpretation, so an afternoon nine needs 9 PM rather than 9. Some terminals print units or codes that are not clock minutes. Confirm what the machine’s report means before typing those values into a time field. A decimal duration such as 7.5 is not a clock-out time. Keep the original card available so that another person can trace the entry you chose.

Keep the lunch gap outside the work periods

When the card shows a lunch departure and return, enter the working periods on either side and do not deduct the same gap again. Review the first period’s default 30-minute unpaid break, removing it if lunch is already excluded. Add separate breaks only for additional rests inside a recorded period, marking paid rests independently. An overnight pair ends the next day when the ending time is earlier than its start. Equal times count as zero with a warning; they are not interpreted as a full 24-hour shift.

Compare minute totals before payroll numbers

The results provide hours and minutes for comparison with the physical card and decimal hours for spreadsheet arithmetic. Thirty minutes is 0.5 hours rather than 0.3. Default overtime evaluates hours above 40 separately in each fixed workweek; two-week totals are not judged against one 80-hour threshold. Optional daily and combined modes are simplified estimates. This calculator does arithmetic, not legal classification or payroll compliance. Whether a punch represents payable work, a paid break or an authorized correction needs confirmation in the actual recordkeeping process.

Export a transcription without replacing the source

Download CSV or print the checked card for review. These outputs describe the entries you supplied; they do not authenticate a physical punch, approve a correction or amend an employer’s database. Keep the original record with any required approvals in the appropriate system. Browser storage is local and can be cleared, so export a backup when needed. Full-card links deliberately carry the entered records and can be read by recipients. Use them for a controlled transfer rather than assuming that an unlisted link is a private employee portal.

Frequently asked questions

Can this calculator scan a punched card image?

No. You transcribe the times manually from a legible source, keeping each clock-in and clock-out pair together. The calculator does not perform image recognition, authenticate a punch or retrieve employee records from a terminal. Confirm unclear marks and corrections before treating the entered transcription as a finished working-hours record.

What should I do with a duplicate punch?

Verify whether it is a correction, an accidental duplicate or a real additional period before entering it. The calculator sums the periods you supply and does not automatically choose an authoritative mark or remove overlapping work. Entering both records without checking can count the same working minutes more than once.

Does a printed decimal number belong in the clock field?

Only if it actually represents a clock time in an accepted format. A duration such as 7.5 hours is not a clock-out entry. Some terminal reports use special units or codes, so confirm the source format before transcribing it. Use the calculator’s decimal result after entering the actual clock pairs.

What happens if I have not clocked out yet?

An unfinished period is marked incomplete and excluded from the total until both times are valid. Leave the clock-out blank while you confirm the actual ending time. The calculator does not run an attendance timer or guess when you stopped working. Other completed periods continue to count normally.

Can I download the result for a spreadsheet?

Yes. Download CSV gives you individual periods, decimal hours, hours and minutes, and totals. The decimal-hours column contains numbers suitable for spreadsheet calculations. Copy summary produces tab-separated rows for pasting, while Print gives a readable report. Check your times and breaks before using any exported figures for payroll.

Do I need an account, and where are my entries saved?

You do not need an account. Calculations run in your browser, and entries are saved locally on this device rather than uploaded. A full-card sharing link contains the records in its fragment; anyone holding it can read them. Export your own backup before clearing browser storage or switching devices.
